5 Cops arrested for human trafficking, kidnapping & extortion

 | by News24.com

Five Pretoria police officers have been arrested for alleged involvement in human trafficking, kidnapping and extortion in two separate incidents, police said on Wednesday

In a statement, police said four Silverton flying squad members allegedly kidnapped 10 Bangladeshi nationals, who were smuggled through Zimbabwe into South Africa. The alleged incident took place last month and according to police, two of the 10 victims were released after their families paid a ransom.
“SAPS (SA Police Service) national Crime Intelligence worked tirelessly with the investigators on the case and identified four Silverton flying squad constables that are alleged to have kidnapped the victims,” the statement reads.
“A warrant for the arrest of each of the suspects was obtained earlier this week and on Wednesday, three of the constables were nabbed at the Silverton 10111 centre.”
The fourth officer did not report for duty but police are adamant that an arrest is imminent.
In the second case, two members of a stabilisation intervention in Mamelodi, north of Pretoria, were arrested in connection with extortion allegations.
“A man, allegedly a drug dealer, contacted the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit and informed them that police members were demanding money from him.”
The two members, one from Silverton SAPS and another from the Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit, were arrested at a restaurant in Silverton on Tuesday evening and alleged extortion money was recovered from them.
National police commissioner, Lieutenant General Khehla Sitole, expressed disappointment at the police officials’ alleged transgressions.
“It is disheartening when members who are entrusted with the safety of law-abiding citizens are seen to be committing crimes themselves.
“While we allow justice to take its course, the arrest of these members should serve as a warning to other law enforcement officials that criminality within our ranks will not be tolerated,” added Sitole.
The officers are in police custody and will appear in court once a date has been confirmed.

Two police officers have been arrested following a failed armed robbery at a Jet Mart store in Krugersdorp, on the West Rand.

It is alleged the police officers and two of their accomplices entered the store in Monument Street at about 2pm yesterday. They pointed fire arms at the staff members at the store and tied them up while they cut open the safe, Krugersdorp News reported.
After approximately four hours, police managed to arrest the four robbers. They were subsequently detained at the Randfontein police Station.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said departmental steps will be taken against the police officers.
“Police management in Gauteng is of great concern and we will take strong action against police officers who are corrupt and involved in criminal activities. Those officers are a burden to the force and any information to expose them can be forwarded to the Provincial Duty General and Brigadier on 082 313 8299 or 082 444 4354 at all hours,” he said in a statement.
The suspects have been charged with business robbery and will appear in court soon.
In another incident, two police officers were robbed of their fire arms and car keys by bogus cops in Boksburg, on the East Rand last Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Kwendzakwakhe Ngobese said: “The suspects driving in a vehicle described as a charcoal VW Golf equipped with a police siren opened fire on the Ford Fiesta and hit the windscreen and the boot, forcing the motorist to stop his car.”
“The suspects then confronted the driver and robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash and his car keys,” he added.
Ngobese said two Boksburg police officers in private clothes were driving in an unmarked vehicle when they noticed something suspicious was happening and proceeded to the scene.
“However, the wailing of police sirens on the suspects’ vehicle tricked the officers into believing that it was their colleagues who had already responded to the scene. The officers decided to also respond to the scene to act as backup,” he added.
“To their great surprise, the suspects pointed guns at them and robbed them of their belongings before fleeing the scene,” said Ngobese.

Cops arrested for extortion, kidnapping

ANA Reports

“A South African Police Service (SAPS) reservist and three community patrollers stationed at Pretoria Central were arrested on Thursday in connection with kidnapping and extortion, after a man they allegedly swindled positively identified them.

“According to the complainant, aged 38 years old, on Tuesday at around 11am, one female dressed in police uniform and three African males dressed in private clothes approached him while he was sitting inside his car at the corner of Pretorius and Lilian Ngoyi Street, next to McDonald’s in Pretoria CBD,” said Pretoria police spokesperson, Captain Augustinah Selepe.
“It is alleged that the suspects [the police officer and patrollers] knocked at the window of the complainant’s car, they then asked for his driver’s license and they told him that it was a fake. He was then taken to home affairs to verify his passport and permit. The complaint was informed by the suspects that his passport was fraudulent.”
The man insisted that driver’s licence and passport were authentic.
“The suspects went into the complainant’s car and drove around Pretoria CBD with him, from around 11am until 4pm. They demanded R10 000 and threatened to arrest and deport him if he does not pay. At the end, the suspects demanded R3 500 and went with the complainant to withdraw money from an ATM,” said Selepe.”
