An alleged illegal immigrant, without tax registration papers for his shop, was beaten and arrested when he tried to escape Johannesburg Metro Police Department officers during the continuation of a massive crime-prevention operation in the inner city yesterday.

The Pakistani national saw blue lights approaching in Rockey Street in Bellevue, and locked his shop doors, said a police spokesperson.

The officer planted his foot on the second suspect's upper thigh. The man screamed and grabbed hold of the officer's ankle. The officer then kicked him.

Meanwhile, the shop doors had been forced open and the arrested men were led outside. The second man was released when it was found that he was a resident who rented a room in the back of the building.

According to the police, when the officers arrived, the shopowner had run into the tenant's room. Both then were seen trying to leave. All the goods in the shop have been impounded.
