Researcher: Officials knew about corrupt cops
Cape Town - A Cape Town criminologist who sent her study on corrupt police officers to various officials is dismayed that no action had been taken, it was reported on Wednesday.
A part of Liza Grobler's thesis, titled "The murky symbiosis of dirty cop and gangster", was sent to community safety MEC Dan Plato in February, the Cape Times reported.
She said that other than acknowledgement of receipt of the report, there was no communication on the findings.
When her study was published in 2006, she had also sent it to then community safety MEC Leonard Ramatlakane, his successor Lennit Max and former Western Cape police commissioner Mzwandile Petros.
"I never heard from them...Their whole attitude was extremely strange and they didn't seem to be interested in scratching it open and healing it," Grobler told the newspaper.
Through interviews, it was alleged that police officers were known to steal drugs from court exhibits and act as couriers by using police vehicles to transport drugs for dealers.
Plato's spokesperson Greg Wagner said the MEC received numerous reports on a daily basis.
He said 438 cases of criminal conduct by provincial officers were reported in 2010/2011.
