Cape Town - Two men walked into Lansdowne police station on Wednesday night and shot at a police officer filling out the paperwork on a suspect who had walked in to hand himself over.
The suspect walked into the police station at 1.35am and approached the front desk.
It is believed
the man had surrendered over house-breaking and theft charges, but police declined to comment.
“All we can say is that there was a warrant of arrest out for this man, and he handed himself in,” said provincial police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk.
About 10 minutes later, while officers were processing the man, two unidentified men walked in and pointed a firearm at an officer on duty.
The man who police were processing screamed, alerting another police officer.
A shot was fired at the police officer sitting at the front desk.
The two men then ran out of the station and fled in a white Bantam bakkie.
The officer was taken to a nearby hospital where a flesh wound to his wrist was treated.
Van Wyk said he was in a “stable condition”.
It is believed three officers were on duty at the time - the officer at the front desk in the charge office and two others elsewhere in the police station.
The man who handed himself over appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Officers described one of the suspects as tall with a dark complexion, while the other was wearing a red T-shirt.
Van Wyk said police were investigating a case of attempted murder.
He said the the motive for the shooting was not known. It is believed that the man who had handed himself in was not linked to the shooting.
Anyone who can assist with information is asked to contact the Lansdowne police on 021 700 9045 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
