The group was protesting against a drug-dealer selling whoonga to 12-year-olds…
2011-03-31 The SAPS at Paarl-East injured nine Afrikaans-speaking Khoi-San women and children on Sunday – shooting at them on the request of an alleged drug dealer. The police shot at the small, unarmed group of people with shotgun-pellets and rubber bullets. http://www.paarlpost.com/cgib/article?newsid=21391
(source: Lise Beyers) About fifty residents had gone to the accused drug-dealer’s home in Plumbago Street in Klein Nederburg to discuss his selling drugs to small children – and to draw public attention to his criminal activities. He allegedly hires a property at R2000 a month from the municipality – which is located right between two low-income housing estates with primarily black immigrants - , and who in turn also sell on his drugs to indigenous Western Cape Afrikaans-speaking residents. Children as young as 12 years use his drugs, residents say.
The drug dealer and his wife got so frightened by the group of women and children, that they demanded that the police chase them away. So the police shot at them with shotgun-pellets (not known whether it was bird-shot or the more lethal buckshot) and rubber bullets. Nine residents had to be rushed to Paarl hospital for removal of shotgun-pellets and one three-year-old, Arries Clusken, broke am arm in two places in the rush to flee. One of the injured, Mrs Susan Adriaanse of Bauhenia apartments, required ten stitches to her heel after it was shredded by a shotgun-pellet blast. And 67-year-old Mrs Mary Vanniel had six pieces of shrapnel removed. The cops also shot up windows and cars were damaged.
They sell drugs to 12-year-olds…
Mrs Adriaanse said the families “have been talking to the municipality and calling the police for years in our battle against this drug dealer'. We view with our own eyes how drugs are sold openly. On Sunday we just got enough of this man's illegal activities and wanted to go and talk to him about it. Instead, he got the police to shoot us. How can anyone justify that unarmed women and young children are being shot at with shotguns by the police? What kind of damage could our small group ever have done".
One of the victims said it's not at all unusual to have 12-year-olds using the man's drugs. Police spokeswoman w/o Diana Linee said 'an internal investigation' will be launched into the shooting. She did not explain whether it was official policy for the police to allow drug-dealers to order shotguns to be fired at unarmed women and children.
* Women and children were also injured on Sunday evening, when police opened fire on a crowd of people who were protesting against the sale of drugs in Paarl East. http://www.paarlpost.com/cgib/article?newsid=21391
