'Corrupt cops renting guns to criminals'
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer said on Wednesday he was well aware that corrupt police officers were renting out their firearms to criminals.
Lamoer was the guest speaker at the Cape Town Press Club on Wednesday.
In the past year, more than 80 Western Cape police officials were arrested and charged with criminal offences
Lamoer said he knew of their corrupt tactics.
“We also know that some of our police officers hire their guns out to people to commit crimes, and it is the truth because we’ve already arrested some of our own members for that.”
It’s been nearly two years since Lamoer took charge of Western Cape police.
He said there are still changes being made.
“Some of our members have specific skills that have been wrongly placed, and that is the process that we’re busy with. This process actually only started on 1 April 2012.”
