POLICE ARRESTED HIM AT 10PM.
A local pub-customer sent Farmitracker this picture of Eben
Meyer, taken slumped over at the pub just minutes before he was thrown out of
the pub - indeed so drunk he could not walk, the photographer reports. Yet the
SA police claimed Meyer had been 'beaten to death in a police cell' within half
an hour of his arrest just after this photo was taken, claiming that he had
'had a fight with cellmates'.

The photographer wrote us:
"This photo of Eben Meyer was taken at the Stones pub in
Durbanville at 9:28pm 20April2012 were he was resting on his arms on the bar.
He was thrown out about 9:40pm as he tried to stand up but he fell"...
The photographer wrote: "When I got to Stones at 9:20pm
I saw the police patroling in the parking area at Stones. Eben Meyer was picked
up by the police before 10:00pm when he was thrown out of Stones. He was so
drunk but should have been taken to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. I still
have the foto and the time and date when it was taken with my Black
Berry."

After his murder, the Cape Argus journalist Murray Williams
interviewed Mr Meyer's fiancee, Durbanville woman Sylvia Hamman,writing that
she was ' mourning the death of her fiancé Eben Meyer, 48, after he was beaten
to death within half an hour of having been dumped in a police cell on Friday
night with eight other men. The fiancee told the Cape Argus she last saw
48-year-old Eben Meyer on Friday morning when he set off to work at a courier
company near Ysterplaat air force base. Some 18 hours later, she was informed
by police that he had been beaten to death in a cell at Durbanville police
station.
Police spokesman Andrè Traut told the Cape Argus on Monday
Meyer "had been arrested during the early hours of Saturday morning for
being drunk in public".
He was detained and placed in a cell with eight others.
“Meyer was assaulted and succumbed as a result of his injuries." He
claimed 'it appeared HE had an argument WITH OTHER MEN.' The 'incident' had
occurred at around 1.30am within half an hour of his detention. “The two
suspects, who were also being detained with him in the same cell for being
drunk, are now facing a murder charge,” Traut said.The two suspects are due to
make a court appearance in Bellville tomorrow.”
According to a report on Monday, Meyer had been at a
well-known pub in Durbanville, and had been repeatedly kicked and hit by his
fellow detainees in the police cell.
Hamman said she was “devastated” at the news of Meyer’s death
and blamed police.
“It must be investigated. If the police had looked after his
safety, he would not be dead today.”She said they had been due to marry in
September.
A family member confirmed that Meyer had three children –
Naomi, 24, Sonika, 22, and Inge, 17 – from a previous marriage. - Cape Argus
