MODIMOLLE -  Two  officers attached to the Modimolle police  were each granted  R1 000 bail by the Modimolle magistrate’s court last Thursday for  corruption and theft involving smuggled cigarettes.

Lt Col Mohale Ramatseba said the two sergeants  stopped a bus from Zimbabwe on the  N1 between Polokwane and Pretoria which was carrying smuggled cigarettes worth about R12 000.

"Two   women were found in possession of the cigarettes  and taken to a remote location   under the  pretext   they were  arrested.

"The  officers demanded  money from the women, upon which they were given  R5 500 and the cigarettes,  which never reached the   station," Ramatseba  said.

The case was postponed to  June 5.
"They will be served with  suspension letters pending internal disciplinary processes," said Ramatseba.

The provincial commissioner of the SAPF,  Lt Gen Simon Mpembe,  condemned the conduct of the  officers and warned other police officers  who are  inclined to corruption that their days are numbered.
He urged  the community to report any corruption   by the police to the anti-corruption hotline at  0800 701 701 or 086 00 10 111.
