Crimes of the South African Police Service

Kidnap officer is in custody
The police officer accused of kidnapping a Bedfordview businessman made his first appearance in the Germiston Regional Court yesterday.

The case was remanded to next month for a bail application and an identity parade to be held. The officer cannot be named as he has not yet pleaded to charges.

The Silverton detective was arrested at the Caltex garage on the M1 by the SAPS Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation. They reportedly laid a trap for the accused by placing a loaf of bread in a tin instead of the R100 000 he had demanded. The kidnapping occurred during a house robbery and the victim was found in Atteridgville yesterday and brought to the police station, police said.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesman, Moses Dlamini, said the officer is facing suspension.

Police are still hunting for five more suspects.

Dlamini also said Ipid was investigating an attempted murder charge against the Bedfordview police officers who shot and wounded triple South African Music Award winner Khulani Morule, aka Khuli Chana, this week.

The shooting took place at the same place where the kidnapper was arrested.

“Seven shots were fired through the passenger window. There were no other bullet holes in the vehicle,” said Chana’s publicist Sheila Afari.

“The members of SAPS were present in an unmarked vehicle and had no identifiable features to denote that they were members of the police. It is common cause that they were there on duty as a crime had been perpetrated. It is also common cause that several shots were fired at our client who was not involved in the said crime.”

On behalf of Chana, she has denied that any warning shots were fired.
