Crimes of the South African Police Service

Two cases of police station rapes blemish Durban SAPS
A DURBAN policeman is being investigated for rape after he allegedly sexually assaulted a female complainant at the Workshop satellite police station in the city’s CBD.

Provincial police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident, saying the police lieutenant was being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

Zwane said the SAPS had also taken steps against the policeman following the incident two weeks ago.

He did not elaborate on what those steps were.

“A criminal case of rape has been opened against the policeman. He is, however, still at work until a directive is given by the provincial commissioner on a way forward,” he said.

A police source said the victim had gone to the police station to open a robbery case.
“She was apparently the last complainant for the day at this station and had been assisted by this police officer, who had then taken her to an office at the station, where he allegedly raped her,” he said.

The victim had not reported the matter at the same station, but had gone straight to Ipid.

Meanwhile, a 19-second video that The Star’s sister newspaper, The Mercury has seen is doing the rounds.

The video appears to show another Durban policeman dressed in full uniform having sexual intercourse with an unidentified woman on the stairs at another satellite police station in Durban.

Zwane confirmed they were aware of the video.

“The woman in this particular video has not come forward to open any case. We will, however, be taking internal disciplinary steps against the policeman,” he said.
