CAPE TOWN – A police group commander who
lied in court about taking a bribe was jailed for six years on Monday.
Shaun Davids held the rank of warrant
officer at the Steenberg police station, in Cape Town’s southern suburbs.
He appeared in the Bellville Specialised
Commercial Crime Court, before Magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg, who found him
guilty of corruption.
Davids was found guilty of demanding R3,000
to release a convicted crayfish offender’s confiscated vehicle back to him.
The magistrate said corruption in the police had reached epidemic
proportions, and stiff sentences were the only way to deal with it and to deter
would-be offenders.
