A police sergeant stationed at Evander police station in Mpumalanga has been arrested for releasing a female suspect who’d been arrested for suspected theft.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Leonard Hlathi says the suspect had been remanded in custody after appearing in court pending her next appearance next week.
Hlathi says the Sergeant appears to have ignored the court’s instruction and released the suspect on a warning which is an act of gross violation in terms of the law.
As a result, the Sergeant was arrested and is expected to appear before the same magistrate court soon.
The provincial commissioner has cautioned members to always adhere to the prescripts of the law and to be observant lest they are found wanting and will be dealt with harshly by the full might of the law.
