SA Police use "most dehumanising torture imaginable" -- report by "Campaign Against Torture"

November 6 2002- By Graeme Hosken -Suspects in police holding cells in Durban were found  tortured
73% of the time - and one arrested man was beaten to death with an iron bar at Chatsworth police holding cells in Durban, according the human rights organisation Campaign Against Torture.  Their 23 monitors this year carried out 149 interviews of suspects in Durban area police holding cells - and found that 86 of the 149 arrestees questioned had been tortured. Arrested people are sometimes "assaulted, kneecapped, bitten by dogs, suffocated and subjected to other forms of unimaginably inhumane, violent abuse, such as police batons inserted into their anuses during interrogation."Campaign Against Torture's report states that the SA police had stonewalled the monitoring processs for two years by holding up 23 accreditation badges for its monitors --  and now try to "sweep the report under the carpet" and also are now preventing the organisation from seeing any more arrestees in police cells until the police have perused this report.

Police Falsely Arrest and Seriously Injure Civilian
20080222 Feb 22 2008 –
Afrikaner farmer Ettienne Bernard Terblanche, 40, was awarded damages in the amount of R603,701 plus court costs by the Pretoria High Court -- which the SA Police Service will have to pay him for a false arrest in 2005.The farmer was arrested and driven around so roughly by the then-commander of the Cumberland police station that he suffered serious back damage. And the commander then refused hospital treatment and sent him on transport to the Thabazimbi law court - where the charges were dropped at once. Terblanche had been arrested for killing a hippo -- even though he had obtained a legal permit from the Department of Environment beforehand to shoot an aggressive, rogue hippo which was attacking workers and damaging crops. He and his nephew had gone to shoot the animal at the riverside, but had only injured the animal. They traced the injured hippo to the middle of the river and his nephew had then shot it dead. They dragged the animal to his own farm and slaughtered it there. The Cumberland police showed up at the farm shortly thereafter and Terblanche had shown them the legal hunting permit to shoot this animal. Then police inspector M I Mogale -- who has died since then of natural causes -- had shown up and accused Terblanche of destroying a fence (on his own farm) in order to drag the animal through it.
·         Terblanche was arrested very roughly by a large police force --  his legal rifle was confiscated, together with his boat and tractor, as well as the meat  - which had been earmarked for distribution among the workers. Mogale himself had dumped the farmer into the back of a police van and then had driven him 'very roughly' to the police station - in fact at such a high speed that the farmer was dropped several times onto the floor and had hit his head against the roof of the van. During this drive his back was injured so badly that he was unable to walk to the police station. Mogale had then dragged him to the police station instead and dumped him on the floor in front of the charge counter. Mr Terblanche had lain there in great pain until his wife showed up - and her requests to take him to hospital were denied. Terblanche then was dumped back into the police van in full view of many onlookers and friends from an auditor's firm and taken to Thabazimbi magistrate's court, still suffering incredible pain enroute. At the court, he again had to be physically carried into court by the police constables - he could not walk.At the law court, he was able to prove that he had a license to shoot the rogue animal and the charges against him were the immediately withdrawn. After his ordeal required extensive treatment and bedrest for six weeks at the farm - medical reports submitted to the court showed that his spine had been knocked out of allignment because of the falls sustained during the drive.

·         Judge Visser ruled that the police officer Mogale's treatment of the Afrikaner farmer had been 'exceedingly brutal and unwarranted'.

·         'It can be deduced from the police officer's behaviour throughout the arrest that Mogale had had 'an inappropriate personal motive, and it was unforgiveable that he had refused an ambulance and refused to take the injured farmer to hospital. "Mr Terblanche was robbed illegally of his freedom for five hours, was driven around under life-threatening circumstances and also, no apologies nor explanations were ever given to him by the police,' the judge ruled when awarding the cash amount.

SAPS captain Ptrick Magonono, head of the Magalies smallholdings region north of Pretoria's CID, arrested for armed robberies with with colleagues
20080626
The head of the SAPS CID was arrested and charged with armed robbery in the Jphannesburg magistrate's court -- for carrying out a series of very violent armed robberies allegedly carried out with five other colleagues from the same branch in April. Their reign of terror allegedly had targetted both 'foreign blacks' as well as Afrikaner smallholder families lving in the Brits/Cullinan/Leeuwfontein/Kameeldoring area. Witnesses and victims positively identified them. Beeld journalist André Damons reported that  six black SAPS-detectives, all ANCmembers,  were arrested enmasse last week by members of the specialised crime-investigations unit of the Gauteng provincial police head-office, who had arrived in a fleet of unmarked police cars to arrest them at their police station. Targetting foreigners, Afrikaners' homes in Magalies area: The state prosecutor said that Magonono and his other five colleagues have already been positively identified by various state witnesses as the men who allegedly carried out armed raids on the homes of 'foreigners' in April.

THE MCBRIDE FILES:
20080317 East Rand Ekurhuleni metropolitan police chief McBride: "I will arrange to have your wife raped, kids killed'..

March 17, 2008 - The Pretoria Regional Court has heard that East Rand/Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride (pictured in front, right) - a high-ranking ANC-struggle comrade  -- had intimidated one of his officers into not testifying against him in his drunken-driving trial, by telling his comrade that 'he would arrange for his wife to be raped and his children and pets murdered'.It is apparently quite routine for influential ANC-members like McBride to threaten and intimidate others in order to maintain the local ANC's power-base, according to this testimony.

20080926 Van Sitters family chased by police chopper, roughly arrested for non-existent 'murder'of black maid

Afrikaners Frans van Sitters, 53, son Jean, 16 and his friend Michelle Cloete were terrified when they suddenly found themselves being chased by a police helicopter on the road between Brandfort and Theunissen. In a deeply strange incident the Afrikaner man and the two children with him were were hunted down by police chopper, then brutally arrested by a large group of armed cops. The boy was assaulted and threatened that they would kick in his rib-cage --  and then the family was accused of a murder which actually had never happened. And all this happened on the Van Sittert boy's birthday.Apparently Van Sittert had bought second-hand window-frames from a destitute man along the road. This was reported to local police by two children who claimed the Afrikaner had bought 'stolen goods'.Then this incident was somehow linked to the ACCIDENTAL death of a black maid back in Bloemfontein -- she'd fallen against a washing machine, hitting her nose, and her nose-bone had penetrated into her brain and she'd died. Nobody was present during this accident - however the local cops investigating this freak-accident somehow had been led to believe that the black woman had died in an armed robbery instead. They then linked the Van Sitters and Ms Cloete driving back home from Bloemfontein to the children's claims that they had just bought some 'stolen goods' from the roadside. And then all hell broke lose.
Police superintendent Susan Moseki' investigates.

Van Wyk's anus was 'penetrated by more than one man' forensic experts testified, and the foreman showed 'heavy bruising but was not sodomised.'' The testimony was that the police had failed to inspect the cells and also pretended they didn't hear his screams, covered up by' unusually loud singing ' from the gang-rapists.

2007 Death of businessman Roy Scallan - castrated live, shot dead...suspect Mdudi Robson dies in cell
Suspect Mdudi Robson commits suicide at Walmer police cells - March 2 2007 - PORT ELIZABETH. Norman Silke of  "Die Burger" newsburger in Port Elizabeth writes that Walmer police have closed their investigation into the gruesome death of local businessman Roy Scallan, 54, who was castrated while stile alive and then killed execution-style. In South Africa, witch-doctors often pay large amounts of cash for the genitals of such "alpha-male" community leaders. They make expensive medicine ("muti") from genitals. Mr Scallan had not only been a leading, well-liked businessman, but also was in the prime of his life.
Police senior uperintendent Hein Fourie, commander of the Walmer detective unit, said "police were  convinced that his murderer was the suspect who has since committed suicide in the Walmer Police cells." Shortly after the Scanlan murder, police arrested the man, Mdudi Robson, 26, and his brother -- both had been former employees of Scallan.

Afrikaner pilot Attie van Schalkwyk robbed at gunpoint by two Pretoria-West cops with a R5 military-assault rifle...

20080629

June 29 2008 PRETORIA. Commercial pilot Attie van Schalkwyk, 32, of Hartbeespoort was pulled over on Church Street in Pretoria-West enroute home from the Johannesburg airport near Kempton Park at 10pm after returning from a flight. The two uniformed police officers inside the police vehicle then pointed a R5 military assault rifle at him, accused him of 'drunken driving', said he was arrested --  and then forced him to withdraw large amounts of cash at two cash points nearby which they took for themselves. They took no breathaliser- nor blood-tests. The Afrikaner pilot ran for his life, jumping out at a stop-sign on a turn-off to the black township of Atteridgeville he was being driven to.
He and his wife have now placed formal robbery charges at the Hartbeespoort police station and the Police Inspectorate has also been informed. Investigations are ongoing against the two Pretoria-West police officers, who claim the Afrikaner pilot had been 'drunk'. However he and his attorney Wilhelm Mundt provided legal proof that he had been sober at the time. The two UNNAMED police officers who had robbed him at gunpoint, claimed that they were 'investigating a charge of drunk driving' against the Afrikaner pilot, but took neither blood- nor breathalyser tests during his 'arrest'.  Van Schalkwyk says he now fears for his life and believes the Pretoria-West cops and their comrades would not hesitate to take revenge.

Christopher van Rensburg, 33, Nigel, beaten to death by black cops in cells:
20080915
- mom Theresa Mercia van der Merwe awarded R390,000 compensation Aug 15 2008 - PRETORIA HIGH COURT -- The mother of Christopher van Rensburg, 33, arrested in Nigel in September 2005 with another man in trumped-up 'drunkenness' charges, was beaten to death by black cops in the local police cells. Van Rensburg had tried to stop these cops from beating up his friend. Forensic examinations determined that Van Rensburg had been sober, as had been his friend. Police brutality costs the SA taxpayers R120-million paid out in compensation claims like this last year. Yesterday the Pretoria High Court granted compensation to his mother Mrs Theresa Mercia van der Merwe, 53. The Minister admitted in the documents before the court, that actions by State-officials had caused Van Rensburg's death. He had died of multiple injuries inside the police cell while he was beaten up - in front of many witnesses. The police who participated and witnessed the beating also refused to obtain medical care for the prisoner in their care and thus also contributed to his willful death, allowing him to just die untended from his injuries, the Police Minister has admitted. Mother Mrs van der Merwe, a nursing assistant at the Life Suikerbos-clinic in Heidelberg, submitted in the court application that Van Rensburg supported her and other family members financially. Her daughter Theresa, 24, is brain-damaged after a car accident and both women need support. The court agreed that 'due to the illegal actions by the police, causing Van Rensburg's death, Mrs van der Merwe and her daughter have been denied the financial support by the deceased. She has also suffered great emotional shock and has been deeply traumatised by her son's death.'  The UNNAMED police officers were not charged with murder, it's not known if they lost their jobs:
