THE defence counsel for alleged poaching kingpin Jason Ross accused the investigating officer of “desperate lying” in order to see his client locked behind bars.
Inspector Marius Herselman had testified that on December 21, 2001, police raided Mr Ross’s Kabega Park home. The regional court heard police confiscated bags containing perlemoen and Mr Ross allegedly admitted they belonged to him. He was then arrested. The defence said a 14year-old boy later came forward to say he owned the perlemoen.
Advocate Terry Price said Insp Herselman was not interested in taking a statement from the teen.
He put it to the inspector that the police had been trying for years to find something to link his client to perlemoen poaching so that he could be convicted. Mr Price also accused Insp Herselman of desperately lying to the court to have Mr Ross convicted.
