BISHO police headquarters yesterday responded to corruption allegations by the former head of the Newton Park vehicle identification unit.
In response to Captain Alex Alexander’s allegations of corruption and his suspension as a means to gag him following his discovery of corruption within the department, spokesman Senior Superintendent Marinda Mills yesterday confirmed that Capt Alexander was suspended without salary, but not for the reasons he had given.
“Capt Alexander was suspended because he was found guilty in a court of law for fraud involving informers’ claims. There is a second fraud case, also involving informers’ claims, pending against him,” Supt Mills said yesterday.
Capt Alexander, she added, had refused to take up a post at the New Brighton police station, in accordance with the police restructuring plan, which had also led to his suspension.
“A police head office delegation evaluated Capt Alexander’s unit and performance and decided to transfer him,” she said.
Capt Alexander claimed that he had been suspended to gag him following his discovery of corruption within the department. The captain alleged that more than R300 000 of taxpayers’ money had been wasted over five years because a request for undercover parking at the Greenbushes vehicle safety guarding unit had not been met.
