held over theft, robbery

SEVEN policemen in total have appeared in court in the past week for
crimes involving robbery, house robbery and vehicle theft.
Four detectives appeared at the Tlhabane Magistrate’s Court in North West yesterday on charges of robbery and extortion. The four – Warrant Officer David Setshedi, Constable Joseph Moremi, Constable Gladness Mogotsi and Constable Anna Mosweu – were arrested on Friday after they allegedly threatened an Ethiopian and demanded money. They allegedly left with an undisclosed amount of cash. The four are in custody and were to appear for a bail application today. In another incident involving an Ethiopian, two police officers – Sergeant Faith Mekgoe and Constable Jacob Monnapula, of the Rustenburg Crime Intelligence Unit – appeared in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday. They are charged with house robbery after they allegedly robbed an Ethiopian on December 13 of cigarettes worth about R100 000 and an undisclosed amount of cash. Police arrested them on Friday. They were remanded in custody until today, when they were expected to appear in court. In Gauteng on Tuesday, the province’s traffic police arrested an SAPS warrant officer for stealing a vehicle after he was stopped at a roadside checkpoint. The 40-year-old, who is based at OR Tambo police station in Kempton Park, was travelling from Daveyton to Kempton Park, according to Gauteng Traffic Police spokesman Obed Sibasa.
