Cops caught in cash for gay rape scam
February 11, 2014
Two
police officers accused of paying off a rape
victim were granted R1000 bail
each in the Giyani
Magistrate’s Court on Monday, the Hawks said.
The officers responded to a
rape complaint in December last year in Gandlanani village in Giyani.
When they arrived at the
scene, a 32-year-old man told police he had been raped by his partner, a
28-year-old man.
“The police allegedly
influenced the victim not to lay charges in return for a R9 000 upfront payment
by the suspect,” Ramaloko said.
The man who was accused of
the rape went to an ATM, accompanied by the police officers to withdraw the
requested amount.
“The police allegedly
handed R3 000 to the victim and shared R6 000 between them,” he said.
The rape victim later
reported the matter to police because he felt cheated, Ramaloko said. He was
expecting to receive the full amount of R9 000.
All three men appeared in
the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday and were each granted R1000 bail.
The case against Constable
Thambo Hector Nsimbhini, 39, and Constable Ronny Gezani Baloyi, 34, was
postponed to March 12, Captain Paul Ramaloko said.
The police officers face
charges of corruption and the man faces a charge of rape.
