Zamas 'rape and rob women'

Frustrated community
members say enough is enough.
THE unassuming mining town of Fochville is plagued bycrime related to
the surge in illegal mining.
Last week, the country's attention was fixed on Benoni, but at the other
end of Gauteng , nine people died in Fochville in illegal mining wars.
Sunday World was told of women being gang-raped and killed in front of
their spouses.
Or the gangs, using wire, would bound husbands and boyfriends in front
of their partners .
Terrified
community members say the police are turning a blind eye because they get
kickbacks
from the Zama Zamas, or Magomoshas, as the illegal miners are known
here.
"The
police supply the illegal miners with arms and ammunition, and get money from
the proceeds of illegal mining in return,"
says one resident who doesn't want to be named.
