Statistics compiled by
the South African Police Services’ human resources division show that 187
police officers were arrested for crimes between 8 July and 26 August this
year.
According to the Sunday Times, 39 officers were
arrested on suspicion of murder, 23 for corruption, 20 for robbery and 14 for rape.
This comes after the
police’s top brass instructed provincial and divisional commissions in July to
start reporting the arrests of staff within 24 hours and to submit weekly
reports to General Riah Phiyaga, the national police commissioner.
