The head of the Polokwane police’s weapons storeroom has been released on bail of R1 000 and will appear in the Polokwane magistrate’s  court on May 28.

The police captain, who was in charge of the store, was charged with fraud and corruption following an investigation after three weapons handed in at the police station for destruction and de-activating could not be traced and were reported missing. According to Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, more weapons than the three reported missing could have been removed from the store and could have been sold.

One of the weapons was allegedly found registered in the name of the captain's wife, also a police official.
It is alleged that the weapon, a vintage collector's piece handed in for de-activation, belonged to the former mayor of Polokwane, Jack Botes.
