An
investigation into a bumper sticker reading “You can run but you will die
tired” on a police bakkie has been launched, The Star reported on Monday.
North West
police spokesman Brigadier Thulani Ngubane was shocked to hear that the
sticker, which has an image of a rifle, was displayed on the back of an
unmarked police car.
“We will
investigate, establish who drives the vehicle and steps will have to be taken.”
According
to the report, the vehicle was parked not far from the scene where 34 striking
miners were killed during a confrontation with police at Marikana, North West,
on August 16 last year.
Ngubane
said personalisation of police cars was prohibited, unless special permission
had been granted, as this could potentially detract from the SA Police Service
brand.
SA
Institute for Security Studies researcher Johan Burger said the sticker was
unprofessional, and came at a time when the police were arguing before the
Farlam commission of inquiry that they acted appropriately at Marikana.
“Clearly
someone must be acted against in terms of the police service’s disciplinary
code,” he said.
“The
message says something about the occupant of the vehicle.”
