A Joburg metro police officer was arrested for
soliciting a bribe from a female motorist he stopped in Fourways, north of
Joburg, on Saturday morning.
“At about 3am, the corrupt officer stopped the
female driver and established that she had consumed alcohol,” spokesperson
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.
“He instructed her to withdraw money from an ATM.
She withdrew R90 and then went to complain at the Douglasdale police, who
photographed the cash and watched her from a distance handing it over to the
officer.”
Minnaar said the man (43) was immediately arrested.
He is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday on
charges of corruption.
The Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has also
launched an internal investigation.
Minnaar said people should call the JMPD corruption
hotline if they get pulled over and asked for a bribe by officers.
