Letter Of The Week - Disgraceful JMPD
2011-02-28
Dear Editor,
I quote from the Joburg.org.za website: “The JMPD manages and co-ordinates the city’s crime prevention strategy”.
At 07h00 on February 15 I witnessed a smash-and-grab on a stationary motorist at the intersection of Sauer and President streets in the CBD. This incident took place in full view and close proximity to three uniformed JMPD officers standing next to the traffic light outside Luthuli House.
Despite motorists leaving their vehicles to chase the perpetrator, the officers did nothing and merely laughed when asked to assist. These officers are a disgrace to their uniform and could easily be substituted by mannequins. The value-add would be the same.
The commercial banks in the CBD spend substantial sums each month on private security guards spreading many blocks from their immediate premises to improve the safety of their staff and the public. Many other businesses have similar initiatives. Perhaps this is what the JMPD means by “coordinating the city’s crime prevention strategy”.
They draw substantial sums of money from taxpayers and then sit back while the taxpayers implement strategy at their own cost.
Now an insurance company is filling potholes. Soon there will be no role for our lazy and incompetent city employees other than wasting taxpayers’ money.
Regards,
Duncan Geach
