A city teacher, who has been suspended from school after being accused of sexually assaulting three pupils, claims he was raped while in a police van on the way to Pollsmoor Prison.

A Cape Town teacher, who has been suspended from school after being accused of sexually assaulting three pupils, claims he was raped while in a police van on the way to Pollsmoor Prison.

The northern suburbs-based teacher, with more than 20 years experience, refused to divulge details to the Cape Times on Tuesday.
He said another newspaper had published comments which he had asked not to be made public.

The weekend newspaper reported that the teacher had claimed he had been raped by inmates while in the van after a court appearance on March 9. He was released on bail of R1 000 on March 14.

The case of sexual assault stems from a complaint lodged by parents in November last year that the teacher had fondled three pupils. He had denied the allegations.
He is expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on May 3.

Western Cape Education Department spokesman Paddy Attwell confirmed the case. Statistics provided by the SA Council for Educators to the Department of Basic Education showed that, between 2007 and 2009, 25 cases of sexual assault of pupils by teachers in the Western Cape had been reported.- Cape Times
