Johannesburg – A policeman who appeared in court for a cash-in-transit
heist is part of an elite task team within police crime intelligence with top
security clearance.
Captain Morris “KGB” Tshabalala appeared in a Sasolburg court on
Thursday in connection with a R3m heist on a cash van in the Free State,
reported the Times Live.
Tshabalala, 39, has top security clearance, which gives him access to
some of the state’s most classified information, which is believed to have
helped him plan at least seven cash-in-transit robberies involving more than
R30m over recent years.
His official responsibilities included gathering crime intelligence on
threats against President Jacob Zuma and top government officials.
Tshabalala was involved in several high-level intelligence operations as
well as criminal investigations into matters like the case against former
intelligence chief, Richard Mdluli.
A source said Tshabalala was instrumental in solving the case against
cash-in-transit heist criminal Collins Chauke a few years back.
He was arrested on Sunday morning as he was about to participate in the
Comrades Marathon.
Police officials close to the investigations have said that Tshabalala
and his colleagues were a law unto themselves.
“They are like God who has become the devil. They operate on their own
terms and account to no one.
“They are untouchable. Our fear is that, like so many other similar
cases against so many other crime intelligence officers, this investigation
will go nowhere.”
