Durban North resident assaulted by a police officer
September 17, 2014
Durban, South Africa – What was supposed to be a stroll along uMhlanga’s beachfront turned into a nightmare for a Durban North resident who was brutally assaulted by a police officer.
Its alleged the officer slammed her car door in her face and then repeatedly punched her in the face and chest. When the resident’s husband came to her aid, another police officer pulled out his weapon and allegedly pointed it at him.
The incident took place in the parking lot of Durban View Park on Sunday afternoon at about 4.35pm.
Her sister, Linda, contacted Northglen News to say she was furious over the assault and said it was shocking.
“My sister and her husband wanted to go for a peaceful stroll on the uMhlanga Promenade. They pulled into a parking, shown to them by the car guard, and were stopped by a man standing in the parking claiming he is keeping it for his friend, who was nowhere to be seen.
“My sister’s husband then parks but the man then goes around to the passenger side and slams the car door in her face and then proceeds to repeatedly punch her in the face and chest. My brother in law confronts the man only to be stopped by his friend who pulls a gun on him so his friend can get away,” she said.
Linda added she later found out one of the men was a police reservist at the Durban North SAPS station.
Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, confirmed a case of common assault and malicious damage to property had been opened. However he could not confirm whether the man involved in the assault was a police officer.
