A police officer from
KwaDabeka, in Clermont, has wounded his pregnant girlfriend before committing
suicide, KwaZulu-Natal's community safety department said on Friday.
Reports suggested that Constable Lizwe Mkhize, 32, used his service
pistol to shoot his 22-year-old girlfriend, who is seven months pregnant, on
Wednesday, said MEC Willies Mchunu.
"Mkhize died at the scene, but his girlfriend and her baby survived
and they are still in hospital," Mchunu said in a statement.
It was not known what led to the shooting.
Mchunu said police officers were often murdered by criminals and it was
unfortunate and painful when they harmed and killed themselves, families,
friends or lovers.
"We need to get into the bottom of this incident so that we can
totally understand what really happened and find methods that can stop these
incidents from happening again," said Mchunu.
