Unprofessional treatment from police officers at Eden Park SAPS
I want to express my unhappiness with the unprofessional treatment, remarks and service I received from a police officer and a trainee on May 18.
May 30, 2015

EDEN PARK – I needed to certify documents for a job application and thought I would do so before I went to pick up my child from school.
I was with my cousin and we stood in the queue, as expected of us. The time went by and I noticed that it was time to pick up my daughter from school. My cousin went to pick her up while I stood in the queue waiting for our turn.
When I reached the front, I put down two sets of documents to be certified. When it came to my cousin’s documents, he refused to certify them and said that I must go back to the end of the queue.
I objected, explaining that we both were in the queue and she had to collect my daughter from school.
He then informed me that they can only certify 10 documents. I asked him if there was a notice to the public to inform us of this practise, since this was the first time I heard of this.
He started getting emotional and angry, and told me that he was not going to sign the documents and I must go to somebody else. When I refused, he took my documents and threw it to the other side of the desk. He also used vulgar language, in his home language, which I could understand. These vulgar words were directed at me. I felt violated and discriminated against when he humiliated me in front of everyone in the station.
As I was leaving, unhappy, I looked to the trainee for some assistance. He also became rude and said that I must just leave as he is not going to help me.
My question is why are they police officers if they are unwilling to help the public?
I did go to see the station commander, who instructed me to write a letter explaining my grievances, and so I did.

"Enock was shot with his hands up, trying to stop the protesters ... My question is: who gave the police the instruction to shoot? It was a peaceful protest," asks Maremo.

Family to take action after man found dead in police van

Nadeem Khan was arrested in Rondebosch last week on suspicion of selling a stolen cellphone.

CAPE TOWN - The brother of a man who died in police custody says he intends taking action, as he believes his arrest was unlawful.

Nadeem Khan was arrested in Rondebosch last week on suspicion of selling a stolen cellphone.

He was declared dead on arrival at the local police station.

His family says he was trying to sell his own phone when he was taken into custody.
The cause of Khan's death has not yet been determined.

But his brother, Amien Khan, says a post-mortem has shown no definitive evidence that he may have been assaulted.

“Being a medical personnel myself we can only surmise the possible cause. I think there was negligence and a wrongful arrest from the police's side.”

Khan says the father of two suffered from bipolar disorder and was on treatment.

“The whole incident caused emotional stress and that actually has a trigger to cause the sympathetic arousal to increase adrenal secretion, which caused him to have hyperventilation and pain on the heart.”

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the incident.

Nadeem Khan died in police custody in Rondebosch last week.

CAPE TOWN - Relatives of a man who died in police custody have appointed a private investigator and a forensic scientist to investigate the circumstances around the 37-year-old's death.

Nadeem Khan was arrested in Rondebosch last week on suspicion of selling a stolen cellphone. But his family insists he was trying to sell his own phone.

He was declared dead on arrival at the Rondebosch police station.

Khan's brother Amien says he believes authorities are trying to cover up the circumstances around is death.

He claims while a post-mortem has shown no evidence of brutality, he says his brother had scratches on his face and his eyes were swollen.

He says police told the family Khan had difficulty breathing before he died.

“I’ve been in discussion with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) as well and asked them if they have camera footage. They said they had bad news for me because they’ve got radio footage of the van approaching and leaving the scene, but they don’t have any footage of the actual arrest. Conveniently, that camera was not working.”

Ipid is investigating.

Cape Town - Western Cape police have refused to be drawn on whether there were links between recent arms cache discoveries and the arrest of a local businessman allegedly connected to a former Gauteng police officer.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said they were investigating after 250 firearms were discovered in a bunker in a Valhalla Park house on Friday. Four people were arrested. This follows the discovery of an arms cache in a Kleinvlei cemetery in August.
In July, police arrested Rondebosch businessman Irshaad Laher, who allegedly smuggled police-confiscated firearms to local gangs.
Laher was arrested after former police colonel Chris Prinsloo entered into a plea bargain. Prinsloo allegedly sold at least 2 000 guns to Laher. In return for co-operating with the state, Prinsloo was jailed for 18 years.
Weekend Argus questioned the national and provincial police on whether there were links between the arms-related busts.
While Van Wyk replied, “Everything is under investigation. We are not going to speculate”, Brigadier Sally de Beer, spokeswoman for the national police, said they hoped Friday’s arrest would “assist us in clamping down on the scourge of gangsterism”.
Laher is scheduled to return to the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. He is out on R100 000 bail and faces charges of fraud, corruption, racketeering and theft of firearms and ammunition.
Laher’s assets, worth R9-million, have also been frozen. This includes his Rondebosch home worth about R3m.

Pretoria - A suspended 33-year-old police constable, who was out on bail in a murder case, appeared in the Empangala Magistrate's Court in Gauteng on Wednesday for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl.

The Independent Investigative Directorate (IPID) said in a statement that the police officer was suspended in 2013 for allegedly murdering 40-year-old Boy Mahlangu.

He was part of a group of four police officers who on Christmas day, 2013, allegedly dragged Mahlangu behind a police vehicle after accusing him of driving an unroadworthy vehicle.

He died later in a local clinic.

IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini said he had been granted bail in the murder case. Dlamini said the constable allegedly raped the teenager in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"The complainant alleges that on Saturday, 14 January 2017, she was walking with her friend from RDP section B to Makarina Tavern when a police officer whose children she went to school with, stopped his car next to her, while her friend was a few steps ahead."

"The police officer was in a car with his friend. It is alleged that the police officer ordered the complainant to get into his vehicle, threatening to shoot her if she didn’t. She duly complied and the police officer drove away after which the policeman dropped his friend at another tavern. It is alleged that the police officer drove to a gravel road and raped the victim".

When the girl returned home and told her mother what had happened, she called the police.

IPID investigators took over the investigation and after the victim was medically examined and interviewed, the constable was arrested.

In the murder case against him, he is expected back in court on February 24.

Cop stole my car, alleges pensioner

Durban - A pensioner whose car was stolen from outside her flat could have sworn she saw it in the possession of a policeman at the Point police station.
Chumpawathie Rajpal, 64, said her maroon-coloured Nissan Sentra was stolen in June from outside her Tafta Lodge flat in South Beach.
Six weeks after she reported the theft, she was convinced her car was parked outside the entrance to Point SAPS with the number plate changed.
Rajpal made enquiries at the station and learnt that the owner was a policeman.
She said she contacted the police when her car went missing.
“I phoned the police and they sent two cops to take my statement and make copies of my car log book. I went to the station a few weeks later to make enquiries on the progress of the case. I was told a detective was handling it and they would call me,” Rajpal, a former saleswoman, said.
In August, Rajpal was walking past the police station when she spotted her car. Having owned it for seven years, the pensioner said she immediately identified several distinguishing marks on its interior and exterior. Rajpal said the number plate had been changed.
“There was a group of policemen standing outside the entrance to the station. I asked them if they knew the owner. They did not respond.
“I went into the charge office and made some enquires. Then a policeman came out and said it was his car and asked me if I had a problem. I asked him if he bought a stolen car. He pointed at the number plate and told me to look at it. I asked him to open the bonnet so I could check something. He said he was off-duty and I should come back tomorrow.”
Rajpal phoned her son who told her to leave the area because there was no telling what they would do to an old woman. She recorded the number plate down and walked away, fearing for her life. The policeman got into the car and drove off.
The car, when she checked at metro police, had been registered in someone else’s name. The name is known to the Daily News.
Recalling her confrontation with the policeman, Rajpal said: “I explained to him that my car was stolen and being a pensioner it would be hard to replace a car. He said it was his mother’s car and she was also a pensioner.
“My hard-earned money was used to purchase the car. Five attempts were made to steal it. I spent money repairing the locks, ignition and wiring,” Rajpal said.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said no arrest had been made and the vehicle had not been recovered.
Rajpal reported the matter to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
Directorate spokesman Moses Dlamini said he would make enquiries with their investigator regarding the allegations.

Durban man shot in the back at police station
28 September 2016, 12:11pm
LOGAN GOVENDER

Durban - A Durban motorist was shot twice in the back in a bizarre shooting incident allegedly involving police.
Ashley Singh's vehicle was shot at about 20 times in the early hours of Friday morning.
He was driving from Suncoast Casino, where he works as an IT technician.
It is alleged that police followed the 26-year-old to the Malvern police station where he had sought refuge and then shot him twice in the back.
The Malvern resident was rushed to Entabeni Hospital and was transferred on Tuesday to the neurosurgical ward. He has been advised by doctors not to remove a bullet lodged in his spine.
It is unclear what prompted police, who were driving in an unmarked white Golf GTI, to have allegedly fired the shots at Singh’s Ford Fiesta and to have followed him into the parking area of the Malvern police station where he had sought refuge.
According to Singh’s fuming father, Lesley Singh, police started shooting at his son’s car near the McDonalds fast food outlet in KE Masinga (Old Fort) Road, apparently for no reason.
He said Ashley was on his way home after his 4pm to 1am shift had ended.
“Ashley did not stop because he feared for his life. He thought by seeking refuge at the Malvern police station he would be safe.
“There, instead of protecting my son, the same police officers in the unmarked Golf GTI ordered him to jump out of the car and to put his hands up,” he told POST.
“Ashley was then shot twice in his back. One bullet is still lodged in his spine. The doctors said it is too risky to have it removed because of the nerves. Ashley is in a lot of pain and is lucky to be alive.”
Lesley added: “Ashley was not driving a stolen vehicle. He is not a criminal but was treated like one by the police officers. I have instructed my attorney (Azghar Ally Khan) to formulate a big damages claim against the minister of police”
Provincial police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said the incident was being probed by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

Cape Town - The bail application of a policeman accused of raping a 15-year-old girl at the Montagu police station was postponed in the local magistrate’s court on Wednesday.

The 47-year-old officer is accused of raping the girl on August 30, after she was taken to the police station to cool down following an altercation with her parents at home.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the matter.
