Johannesburg – Two members of the Soweto flying squad were
arrested on Monday for allegedly shooting dead a fellow officer in January this
year, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said.
“It is alleged that in January 2016, the police were following up
on the information of a hijacked Ford Figo which was sported (sic) around
Soweto. On following that information, the two arrested police officers shot
and killed another police officer whom they alleged that he blocked their
thoroughfare and therefore prevented them from getting the hijacked car,” said
IPID spokesman Robbie Raburabu.
“IPID investigated the
murder and the members, a 49-year-old warrant officer and a 29-year-old
constable, were arrested this morning 09 May 2016 and appeared in the Kliptown
Magistrates court.”
The two are charged with murder and defeating the ends of justice.
They will remain in custody until they make a formal bail
application on Wednesday, May 11.
