Cape Town - Police watchdog Ipid is investigating the death of a
man in a police van, a spokesperson said on Monday.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, was found dead in the back of
the van on Saturday after Rondebosch police arrested him, Independent Police
Investigative Directorate spokesperson Moses Dlamini said.
“The man had been arrested for possession of suspected stolen
goods as he was found selling cellphones near the local Pick n Pay.
“The man was arrested, cuffed and put in the back of the vehicle.
There were no other people with him in the van.”
He is believed to have died on his way to the police station.
“There is no indication yet of what the cause of death is,”
Dlamini said.
