Police from the Protection Security Services team have been arrested in connection with crimes ranging from sexual assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and house-breaking
Six KwaZulu-Natal policemen accused of a string of crimes have been arrested, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Friday.
The five police constables and a warrant officer were all members of the protection security services team in the Cavendish SAPS in KwaZulu-Natal.
They had been arrested in connection with crimes ranging from sexual assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and house breaking.
IPID spokesman Moses Dlamini said five were taken into custody on Thursday, while the sixth man handed himself over to police on Friday morning.
“It’s alleged the suspects sexually assaulted one victim [with] a broken broomstick. The victim... sustained multiple injuries.”
Dlamini said they were also accused of working with civilians in robbing people in their homes and planting drugs on their property and then soliciting bribes to avoid arrest.
“One of the suspects (a policeman) was found with dagga, other drugs and ammunition, and a pellet gun,” Dlamini said.
“He will face additional charges of illegal possession of drugs and illegal possession of ammunition.”
The six were expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court later on Friday.
