SANEF Condemns Police Over the Arrest of Sowetan Journo
Friday, February 15, 2008 - 16:25
SANEF, 15 February 2008.
The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) has condemned the conduct of Durban Metro Police in arresting and detaining Sowetan reporter, Mhlaba Memela.
SANEF states that it has protested on several occasions about the police arresting reporters and photographers at crime scenes, adding that these appear to be attempts by the police to prevent journalists from reporting the incidents.

It further says it regards such interference with journalists carrying out their duties as serious interference with the role of the media and demands that investigations be instituted and the guilty officers punished.

Memela was arrested while he was covering an accident involving two vehicles in Durban’s central business district.
