A 33-year-old Ga-Rankuwa police constable appeared at the Ga-Rankuwa
Magistrates Court on Friday after he was arrested for allegedly raping his
sister-in-law, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said.
“The case has been postponed to Friday 28 February. He is currently
still in police custody and IPID will be opposing bail,” said IPID spokesperson
Moses Dlamini.
According to IPID, the suspect asked his 19-year-old sister-in-law to
stay over at his house to assist with house chores and the children as his wife
was away. “It is alleged that the victim was sleeping in a separate room with
the two children. In the early hours of the morning, the suspect allegedly came
into the room and took the children away, claiming that he didn’t want the
children to inconvenience her in case they needed to relieve themselves while
she was sleeping” Dlamini said.
After a while, the suspect allegedly returned to the room where his
sister-in-law was sleeping and raped her. During investigations, IPID uncovered
that the suspect was currently out on bail on another case of attempted rape.
“The suspect was traced and arrested on Wednesday following preliminary
investigations by the IPID. The investigations continue,” said Dlamini.
