Police
Bullet Hits Innocent Motorist’s Car in Midrand
2009-11-04
Virginia Keppler of Beeld newspaper reports
that Pretoria resident SumarieSchumyn, 41, left on this Beeld picture, of
Wingate Park, thought she’d been hit by a police bullet when a police car
chased past with screaming sirens, in hot pursuit of a fleeing vehicle on the
N1-highway in Midrand.
A bullet from this police car shattered her rear
windscreen. The cop car kept right on going at high speed, she said, while Mrs
Schumyn, believing she’d been hit, was yelling to her husband Karel over the
telephone that she’d been hit. She wasn’t on the roadway at the time: she had
pulled over enroute to Johannesburg at
around 10am, and was talking to her husband over her cellphone when the police
car chased past her.
It went so fast that she couldn’t get its registration
number, she said. “I was pulled over well away from the highway pavement, I
wasn’t in their way at all and they just fired that shot and it could have
killed me,’ she said. The family already was traumatised said her mother Anna
van den Berg, 66 because they’d seen a security guard shot dead in front of
their eyes during an armed robbery at Menlyn-shopping centre in Pretoria
recently.
DA-spokeswoman Dianne Kohler Barnard said the
‘police are out of control and riding around like cowboys in the streets of
Pretoria’. Police sergeant Lynnette Erasmus confirmed that a charge of
deliberate destruction of property has been logged at the Garsfontein police
station and that it has been transferred to the Midrand police station for
investigation.
