Cape Town - Three police officers have been arrested after they allegedly stole dagga from a crime scene and sold it off to drug dealers in Ocean View.
One of the officers has been in the police force for 30 years.
The policemen - aged 33, 43 and 47 - were arrested after the dealers allegedly reported the matter to other cops.
The two warrant officers and a constable appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where they were released on bail of R300 each.
The trio are being charged with theft and defeating the ends of justice.
The three police officers allegedly stole dagga that was confiscated in January at the scene of a murder.
They then allegedly sold the dagga to a local drug dealers in Ocean View.
A police source reveals the dealer reported the matter, and an undercover operation was launched.
Police spokesman AndrèTraut says the trio were bust by the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit on Monday after a six-week-long investigation.
Traut says: “Following an investigation by the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit, the members - two warrant officers and a constable - were arrested as they reported for duty at the police station.
“[They] are being detained on charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice.
“It is alleged that they attended a murder scene where they stole dagga that was found on the premises and thereafter sold it to a resident of Ocean View. The dagga has since been recovered by the police.”
Traut reiterated the police’s stance to “root out corruption” in their ranks.
The matter has been postponed until March 30 for further investigation.
