Vryburg -
A former North West police captain has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment
for the murder of a 19-year old man.
Police spokesperson Thulani Ngubane said Shane Jacobs and three others
were sentenced in the North West High Court sitting in Vryburg last week.
Jacobs's co-accused, Frank Anthony (52) and Solly Ferris (31) were
jailed for 15 years, while Nathan Nieuwoudt (29) was sentenced to 16 years'
imprisonment. Three other accused were acquitted.
The crime was committed on 19 December 2010 in Coleridge, Vryburg when
seven people assaulted Patrick Modukanele (19), who had allegedly stolen a
cellphone from a woman alleged to be Jacobs's relative.
Modukanele was kicked and beaten before being taken to Anthony's house
where he was also assaulted, among others with plastic chairs.
Modukanele died on arrival at Vryburg hospital.
Jacobs resigned in March this year.
