Accused in nun's murder was freed by 'negligent' police

Suspected serial killer went on crime spree

ONE of the men accused of killing Sister Theodelind Schreck, the Eshowe nun, is an alleged serial killer who went on a crime spree after he was freed from custody at CR Swart Square by blundering officers in April.

Mkhwanazi had been charged with hijacking and had been denied bail.
The court postponed his case to June 22 and he was remanded to Westville Prison, said Kweyama.
"My unit booked him out of Westville to investigate his involvement in the killing of a police constable in Inanda, near Durban," said Kweyama.
"As a remanded prisoner we took him to CR Swart to be held in a cell.
"The officer who booked him in wrote down an incorrect date, Saturday June 20, on the register for Mkhwanazi's next court appearance. But cases are not heard on a Saturday unless it's a case of an extreme nature," he said.
When Mkhwanazi was taken to court on June 20 no one at the court had any details of his case.
"Back at the station they let him go without checking what the proper date was for his court appearance," said Kweyama.
