Their arrests comes after a tip-off about a person in possession of stained bank notes from Witbank to KwaMhlanga.

12 November 2014 06:00

MBOMBELA-A 39-year-old police constable has been arrested in connection with possession of counterfeit money.

Constable Lucas Mahlangu stationed at Siyabuswa as Court orderly, was arrested on Thursday morning for being in possession of counterfeit money at Ga-Phaahla, in Siyabuswa.
He was arrested together with his taxi boss friend Charlies Boroko (40) and Thomas Mahlangu (39) by the Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG) Unit after a tip-off of the person in possession of stained bank notes from Witbank to KwaMhlanga.

Thomas Mahlangu was arrested at Verena and he then led to the arrest of Charlies Boroko at Moteti who was also found with one stained note. Boroko ultimately pointed that the rest of the money was with Constable Mahlangu.

The police went to Ga-Phaahla where the rest of the money was confiscated.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, Major-General (Adv) Meshack Nogwanya has vowed that police officials who have an unacceptable, corrupt and disgraceful behaviour and mentality are not welcomed in the service.

“I am impressed by the work done by Crime Intelligence Gathering Unit for ensuring that rotten cops are placed where they belong. I also want to applaud the community that vows not to allow any criminal activity to happen under their noses without informing the police.

Indeed if we continue to work together like this, crime will just be nothing to us. This clearly shows that we are committed to fight any form of crime without any fear of a person’ status. I still repeat that I will not tolerate any form of ill discipline by our members. All those who do not behave according to our prescripts will be dealt with accordingly”.

The trio have already appeared before Mdutjana Magistrate’s Court on November 7 and were remanded in custody for further investigation.

They will be re-appearing on November 14.

Victim speaks out after allegedly being raped by cop

JOHANNESBURG – A woman who was raped, allegedly by a warrant officer stationed at the Ekangala police station in Bronkhorstspruit, has told Eyewitness News how she was allegedly raped at a dumpsite by a police officer.

Salome Mabena went to the station to open a case of abuse against her husband.

A few months after opening the case, the officer investigating it went to her house and asked her to go with him to the police station to clarify some issues.

He however took her to a dumping site, where he allegedly threatened her with a gun and raped her.

Mabena says she was too afraid to report the case to the police station in her area because that is where her alleged rapist works.

She says she laid a charge at the Bronkhorstspruit police station a day after the incident.

Mabena claims that while she was there, she heard the officer who was taking her statement warn her alleged rapist over the phone.

She says when she arrived at home later, her children told her the warrant officer was there and was looking for her.

“He came after I opened the case against him. He told my kids it was not an issue, because it was consensual.”
Mabena says she opened a case with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, but the case was never taken to court and the officer still works in her area.

She says she wants her identity known, as she needs to speak out.

Metro cop found guilty of rape
November 28 2014 at 10:31am
By ISMAIL ADAM
.
Durban -
A Durban magistrate was prepared to take criticism on the chin by convicting an Ekurhuleni metro policeman of rape, but not handing him the minimum prescribed sentence
, saying a few minutes of pleasure had cost him his career.
The married policeman, Sydney Dhladhla, 44, was on Thursday found guilty of raping a 21-year-old woman at his Holiday Inn Garden Court hotel room in July 2012.
He was sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Durban Regional Court, meaning Dhladhla would only need to serve a minimum of 10 months before being eligible for release.
Magistrate Trevor Levitt said that it was a difficult decision for him to make, and though there would be criticism, he felt that the court should deviate from the minimal prescribed sentence of 10 years for rape.
Levitt highlighted the report of the district surgeon who examined the woman which stated that “there was nothing untoward but there was penetration”.
He said that Dhladhla did not deserve to be sentenced to such a long period, although he reminded the policeman that he had taken advantage of a highly intoxicated woman who was “out of it”.
Dhladhla denied raping the woman – his then girlfriend Lerato Mohatle’s friend – claiming she had seduced him.
He had previously testified that the woman had made advances on him while in the hotel room and that the sex was consensual.
Dhladhla and Mohatle had driven to Durban together with the 21-year-old victim. They had been invited as guests by his friend, Paul Mafolo, on the weekend of the Vodacom Durban July in 2012.
Mohatle had testified that she had been drinking from the time she left Johannesburg with the group, and when she arrived at the hotel later that night she remembered feeling sick and passing out in Dhladhla’s hotel room.
She said her friend – the complainant – was also intoxicated by the time they reached Durban, and was to stay at the hotel because they could not reach the person with whom she had initially planned to stay.
The complainant had vomited and then passed out in Mafolo’s room, the court had heard. She had later complained to the hotel reception that someone had come into the room, had sex with her, and then left. She apparently did not know who it was.
Mohatle said that Dhladhla had confessed to sleeping with her friend, but said she had known it was him. He was later arrested by Point police.
Dhladhla was cross examined by prosecutor Krishen Shah on his request for a lesser sentence on grounds that he had good Christian values.
But Shah asked him: “How does a person keep two women – a pregnant wife at home, spend the weekend with his girlfriend and then have sexual intercourse with another woman?”
Dhladhla replied that there was nothing wrong with having two women in his life and that in his culture he had to treat all women with respect. He said he supported both of them. He reiterated his claim that he did not rape the complainant.
During sentencing, Levitt had also taken into consideration the defence’s argument that there was no violence or anything aggravating during the incident.
After being sentenced, Dhladhla applied for leave to appeal which was granted. He was released on R3 000 bail.
The State was also successful in bringing about leave to seek an increase in the sentence.

A couple is taking action after their car was allegedly stripped while under police guard after it was recovered following a hijacking.

Renee and Conroy Gericke were hijacked of their VW Polo at gunpoint in Boksburg in January, the Saturday Star reported.

Police recovered the car in Tembisa in May and placed it at the Van Ryn Deep Vehicle Safeguarding Unit in Mackenzie Benoni.

The couple told the Saturday Star that while the vehicle was at the pound, it was stripped of its side mirrors, console gauges and computer box.

The Gericke’s now wanted police to pay for the tow truck charges and damages the car incurred while in the police pound.

“We don’t have any insurance, now the car is sitting at home gathering dust yet we are still paying for it,” Renee Gericke was quoted as saying.

“We are losing time at work and money driving up and down because of the negligence of the police.”

Brigadier Neville Malala confirmed the Gericke’s had instituted civil action against the police.

“The allegation (of the car being stripped) has come to our attention after a criminal case of theft from the motor vehicle was registered,” Malila told the newspaper.

He said Lt-Gen Mzwandile Petros had called for an internal probe. So far, none of the perpetrators had been identified.

His head was shoved between his legs, a handgun was jabbed into his ribs and another stuck against his temple – Ryan Pickford was convinced he was going to die.

The most recent victim of a blue-light gang, Pickford was held at gunpoint on Friday night for two hours by men claiming to be police officers – in full police uniform.

Pickford had just visited his wife and three-week-old son, who is in high care at the Morningside clinic, on Friday evening when the terrifying experience began that would see him lose his Porsche, his dignity and his trust in the police.

Driving past Leeuwkop Prison on Main Road in Bryanston just before 8pm, Pickford noticed a white Golf GTI following him. The vehicle’s blue lights began flashing, signalling him to pull over.

Two men dressed in police uniforms, wearing bullet-proof vests and wielding R5 rifles insisted on searching his car. During what the men called a “routine search”, another man wearing a police bib approached Pickford’s car from the side of the road.

Pickford, 35, then called his sister to tell her that the police were threatening to arrest him if he did not accompany them to the nearest roadblock for a breathalyser test.

When he agreed, but said he would drive his own car, Pickford was told he was going to be arrested. When he asked why, one of the “officers” handcuffed him and pushed him into the back seat of the Golf.

He watched helplessly as the man in the police bib climbed into his Porsche and drove off. Seated between two other men, who were not in police uniform but wielding handguns, his captors informed him that he was being hijacked. While the two men in the back seat pushed his head down with black-gloved hands, the two uniformed hijackers sat in the front. One started the car and began driving.

Pickford pleaded for his life, saying they could have his car. “I told them about my two kids and wife, and how I needed to be with them.”

At first, the men were reassuring, telling him he wouldn’t be hurt if he didn’t “f*** up”, and that their own children needed to survive as well. But when his sister began calling on his cellphone, the two handguns were pointed at his head and heart. He was told to tell his sister that he was with the police and that nothing was wrong.

After 30 minutes of driving, being interrogated about the cars he drove and his banking details, Pickford began to get anxious. The men were getting increasingly hostile, telling him he would be shoved into the car’s boot, dropped off in the centre of Alexandra, or killed, if he did not co-operate.
“I felt a strange calmness, and I just felt like this was going to be the end,” he said.

He asked why police officers would do this. Pickford remembers saying how he said they were meant to “serve and protect”, a statement that offended his hijackers.

“Who do you think we are? Your servants?” the driver asked.

At around 10pm, the men pulled over in the veld in Centurion, took his watch and cellphone, and told him to run deep into the veld and lie down. Pickford said he thought this would be the moment he would be killed, having seen his hijackers’ faces. But after lying own for several minutes, the men sped off.

Exhausted and trembling, Pickford made his way to a nearby warehouse, where he found security guards, who did their best to help him. It was after midnight by the time he had filed his case with the Midrand SAPS.

A traumatised Pickford is convinced it was police officers who committed the crime – not impersonators. Pickford said he recognised the face of one as a policeman at another roadblock.
“I swore to myself I wouldn’t just lie down and take this… If I can help to save another life (by reporting the case to police), then I will keep pushing this.

“You’re meant to trust them, like doctors or teachers. How will I ever stop at a roadblock again?”
Tracker investigators think a syndicate is at work in the northern suburbs targeting expensive cars. Speaking on condition of anonymity, an investigator said there had been eight high-end vehicle hijackings in the past three weeks.

Police spokesman Katlego Mogale was not available for comment.
