Police in disabled parking row

INDEPENDENT MEDIA
Policewomen were confronted by disgruntled shoppers in Pinetown.

Durban - Police who parked their vehicles in bays designated for disabled and wheelchair-bound motorists came in for criticism at the weekend.
Irate shoppers at two shopping malls photographed police cars and vans parked in these bays and put them up on Facebook, which prompted a huge public outcry.
The parking bays have clear signboards warning motorists they were only meant for the disabled.
At Sandy Centre in Pinetown, two policewomen were engaged in a heated argument with motorists and shoppers on Friday afternoon.
Caylee Short said she was on the second floor of the building when she heard people shouting.
“I peered down and saw the cop van in the disabled parking. A lady, who was not disabled, parked them in to show that it was wrong. Two policewomen came out of the shop and started shouting at her. I heard the one cop say to a man ‘How do you know my brother or sister isn’t disabled?’”
The Facebook posting drew close to 800 “likes” in an hour and more than 100 comments.
Some people heaped praise on the driver who blocked the police in. Others hurled cynical remarks at the policewomen.
Some pondered why they were using a state vehicle to shop. Others said their wheels should have been clamped.
Then, on Sunday, Richard Leask photographed a police minibus parked in a disabled bay at Dirk Spar in Sarnia.
“Cop gets out vehicle and moves the beacon out the way in order for the driver to proceed into a paraplegic parking! Shocking,” he said.
The post also drew criticism from Facebook users.
Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said the SAPS KwaZulu-Natal management condemned irresponsible and inconsiderate conduct by the police officers.
“We embrace the rights of disabled persons and infringement of their rights as alleged cannot be tolerated. We will investigate these serious allegations of misconduct. We wish to unconditionally express our apology to the citizens affected and reiterate that such alleged conduct is in breach of police code of conduct.
“The public is encouraged to bring to the attention of the management any similar unacceptable conduct by the members of the SAPS for corrective and disciplinary measures to be instituted,” Naicker said.

Douglasdale cops in hot water again

March 4 2015 at 01:18pm
By Karishma Dipa

THE STAR
Johannesburg - Douglasdale police are investigating a case in which officers allegedly refused to help a restaurant manager who wanted to lay a charge against their colleague.

The manager took a video of the incident, which was posted online this week by a user who goes by the name of Pmaros.
The amateurish video, which was posted on LiveLeak.com on Monday, shows the officers refusing to open the case when the manager would not identify himself at the police station.
According to LiveLeak, a customer at the restaurant refused to settle a R175 bill and the manager called the police. When two Douglasdale police officers arrived, they allegedly told him he could not open a case because R175 was too small an amount for the work that needed to be done.
The manager then asked the officers to identity themselves, but only one of them did. The unidentified officer allegedly said the manager was drunk, despite his offering to take a Breathalyser test.
When the manager went to the police station to try to open a case against the officers, the captain on duty refused to provide the identity of the unidentified officer. He also refused to identify himself.
On the video, the manager is heard questioning why his own identity is needed in the matter, but the police fail to provide a substantial reason.
Justice Project South Africa chairman Howard Dembovsky said: “The Douglasdale police station is the most appalling police station, in my view. The station should be shut down and all the officers fired.”
The conduct of Douglasdale police officers was also condemned by crime-fighting organisation eBlockwatch founder Andre Snyman.
“This is very disheartening for the dedicated police officers and the Community Policing Forum members who work thanklessly to try to lift the standard of policing at the police stations,” he said in the local newspaper, the Fourways Review.

Police don’t help pensioners after attack on highway
Horror ordeal for pensioners.
The SAPS have disappointed local pensioners after they offered them no help.
A Saturday evening drive home turned into a nightmarish experience for two Delville pensioners, when they were attacked on the highway.
William (69) and Woolbridge (70) Gilbert were travelling home on the N3 highway, at about 9.15pm, last Saturday.
They had just passed the Van Buuren Road off-ramp and were heading towards the Cydonia Road bridge when they noticed a car on the left side of the road and then hit a rock.
“The rock had deflected off the man’s vehicle into our lane and my wife couldn’t avoid it; there were cars in the lane next to us, so we couldn’t move,” said William.
The rock smashed their car’s sump and damaged other parts of the vehicle.
The airbags deployed and the car was filled with gas and powder from them.
“I told my wife to pull over and we got out of the car to let out all the fumes,” William explained.
“Woolbridge was using her cellphone to call someone for assistance, and I went to have a look at all the oil that was spilling from the car.
“All of a sudden there was a man in dark clothing next to me.
“He produced a gun and told me to give him all our money.”
William did not take kindly to this request and told the man to get lost.
“At this point things got a bit crazy,” he said.
“The man pointed the pistol at my chest and fired, but it just clicked; he then repeated this two more times, but both times the gun just clicked.”
The assailant then went for Woolbridge and tried to wrestle her cellphone from her.
She pushed him and William began to chase him.
The man grabbed Woolbridge’s handbag from the car and ran off across the highway.
William gave chase, but he couldn’t climb over the barrier over which the assailant had jumped.
“I returned to my wife and she pointed out people with torches in the trees on the opposite side of the highway,” he said.
“They were obviously going through her handbag.”
A few moments later a police car stopped next to the couple and William dashed to the vehicle, to tell the police what had happened.
“I told them we had been attacked and that the man had tried to shoot me,” William said.
“I also pointed out the torches in the trees and told them that that was where the assailant was.”
William was shocked and disappointed by the SAPS’s response.
“They said nothing, they didn’t get out of their vehicle and they didn’t call for back-up or anything,” he said.
“I couldn’t believe that the police were not going to do anything at all to assist us.”
When a tow truck arrived on the scene shortly afterwards, to assist the man who had originally hit the rock, the police just drove away.
“They just disappeared into the night, leaving us to fend for ourselves,” William said.
William then spoke to the man who had originally hit the rock and he said that the assailant had tried to rob him, too.
During the course of the pensioners’ ordeal a young man driving a silver car also stopped.
“We want to thank this young gentleman for his great act of kindness,” William said.
“He stood with my wife and ‘guarded’ her until we could tow the car away.
“He was very brave and we thank him from the bottom of our hearts.”
The couple arranged for their car to be towed home and then they went to Pretoria to stay with family for the night.
The next day William and his step-son-in-law, Wynand Britz, returned to the scene where they had seen the torches the night before, and found Woolbridge’s handbag.
The only thing missing from it was her ID book.
“I am very angry with the police for not helping us that evening,” William said.
“I think this type of service is beyond bad.
“We should rather have security companies patrolling the highways; at least we know they would do something to assist.
“This is not a police force; they do not have a calling to their work.”
Both William and Woolbridge have decided to go for counselling after their ordeal.

Cop linked to fatal Christmas Day shooting

The policeman has been linked to the Christmas Day shooting of Tremaine Marais, a young soccer player who was shot and killed during a shootout.

Lauren Beukes | 2 March 2015 11:51

A police captain was arrested outside the Durban Regional Court last Wednesday after a warrant of arrest was issued by the Hawks. The policeman has been linked to the Christmas Day shooting of Tremaine Marais, a young soccer player who was shot and killed during a shootout. The incident is believed to have been drug-related.

The police officer, who is ranked as a captain, is known to the newspaper, however, he cannot be named just yet. It is believed that he was in court for another case in which he was charged for the attempted murder of a man who was shot and wounded on New Year’s Day outside a popular entertainment venue in Bluff. The captain had handed himself over to Brighton Beach SAPS.

Prior to his arrest, police recovered a pistol from his residence which turned out to be stolen out of a vehicle from Pinetown last year. The firearm was sent through for various tests and was linked to the scene of the Christmas Day shooting.

Four witnesses have also come forward, confirming that the same policeman pointed the gun and fired shots at them during the incident.

Four charges of attempted murder, one count of discharging a firearm, one count of enticing public violence and one count of malicious damage to property were added to his charge sheet.

Brighton Beach Detective Services thanked the Hawks for the partnership forged in this case which resulted in a positive outcome.

Police accident injures 22 people

POLICE INJURED: A police officer investigates the accident scene in which a truck that was carrying officers from Siyabuswa police station veered into the bushes off Moloto road. Picture: FATI MOALUSI

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the road accident on Moloto road in which 22 police reservists and an officer were seriously injured.

All the injured were taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals. However, one of the injured had to be air-lifted from the scene.

Const Sam Shibambo, the spokesperson for Mamelodi police station, yesterday said the police constable together with police reservists were on their way back to Siyabuswa from Pretoria when the accident occurred on Tuesday night.

“Part of our investigation is to determine what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The investigation will also determine if the cause was a mechanical fault or human error,” said Shibambo.

Shibambo said the police accident investigation unit was already probing a possible case of reckless and negligent driving.

Initial investigations revealed that the police truck veered out of control and crashed into a thicket in a ditch at the side of the road.

This place on Moloto road is considered a “black spot”.
