Johannesburg - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa could face a possible court summons over documents relating to Nkandla following a demand by former national police commissioner Bheki Cele.

Cele, who was fired in June 2012, is playing hardball on Nkandla after Public Protector Thuli Madonsela called for him to explain his role in the controversial R208m upgrade.

According to the Sunday Times, Cele, who was police commissioner at the time, met with Madonsela last month and requested access to documents and relevant information pertaining to the matter so as to answer her questions.

Cele’s lawyers said that Madonsela accepted Cele’s argument and that she would request and/or subpoena the minister of police and/or the SAPS for all the relevant documentation.

Madonsela’s provisional report states that Cele failed to observe the Public Finance Management Act in the procurement of goods and services for the security upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s homestead.

Meanwhile, City Press reported on Sunday that Cele likened Madonsela's investigation into the Nkandla upgrade to a Durban "street committee" or kangaroo court, and also denied that he is stalling the release of the report in order to curry favour with the ANC leadership.
