Crimes of the South African Police Service



The rise in organised crime can be directly attributed to the police’s intelligence unit, which according to experts, is dysfunctional and in a shambles.
The Sunday Times reports that following the release of official crime statistics last week, that clearly show a spike in syndicate-led crimes, experts from the Institute for Security Studies say that with no real leadership, the unit has virtually ground to a halt.
National police commissioner General Riah Phiyega has said she will now personally take charge of the unit, which is tasked with collecting information to combat crime. Its head, Lietenant-general Richard Mdluli has been suspended over allegations that he abused secret funds.
