According to a sex worker operating on Prince Alfred and Burger Streets last Monday, four of them were sjambokked, fined and detained by policemen.
Two sex workers that did not wished to be named stated that this had not been the first time that they were mistreated in a violent manner by policemen. One of the two workers mentioned that they had to resort to prostitution to earn some form of income to support their families, because of the lack of employment in the city.
Police spokesperson Captain Zenzele Ndlovu confirmed that the police have a duty to the state to reduce and eradicate criminal activities in the city and prostitution is certainly a contributing factor to the increase of criminal activity in the downtown area of Pietermaritzburg.
