THE Democratic Alliance (DA) has written a letter to police minister, Nkosinathi Nhleko, informing him about Mokopane residents’ frustrations with the Mokopane police.
According to the DA, residents say they are treated badly.
The DA further said the problem had been raised at various community policing forum (CPF) meetings with no improvement in the situation. Instead residents are threatened with arrest if they continue to complain about police officials, the DA claims.
Complaints received from the residents included alleged racial discrimination as all racial groups were allegedly not treated similarly. Cases were also allegedly being manipulated with the police station personnel deciding whether a case should go to court or not.
Allegations were also made that multiple cases reported to the police station were never investigated and remained stagnant for long periods unless the complainants call to ask about the progress of the case.
Further allegations included lack of service delivery at the charge office.
Residents of the RDP extensions also reportedly complaining that they were threatened with arrest when they wanted to lodge complaints about bad treatment by police officials.
Some high-profile cases such as the one allegedly involving Lt Col Isaac Mantjane seem to have been squashed
The DA requested urgent attention or intervention into this matter by Nhleko as residents felt they should feel protected and not threatened.
At the time of going to print, no comment had been made by the police regarding the matter.
