Two Mitchell’s Plain detectives have been arrested
for fraud after R40 000 allegedly exchanged hands.
The pair were arrested by the Hawks in a parking
lot late on Monday afternoon.
The arrest by detectives from the Western Cape
Directorate of Priority Crime Investigations unit follows an inquiry into
allegations of police corruption.
“At approximately 17:30, shortly after an illegal
deal took place in a parking area in Morgenster Road, they pounced on the
detectives. The two men were arrested and police recovered R40 000 which the
suspects allegedly received for selling a police case docket,” a police
statement reads.
The two detectives, aged 30 and 42, are expected to
appear in court on Wednesday.
Mitchell’s Plain police station commander Colonel
Goolam says the pair are part of a specialised cluster team which investigates
priority gang cases.
“The specialised team investigates cases of
organised crime,” he confirms.
He assures the community of station management’s
commitment to stomp out corruption.
“We remain steadfast in rooting our rotten apples
within the police force,” he maintains. “It is only with the help of the
community that we will be able to do this.”
