Two police officers were allegedly involved in a shoot-out in Bergville on Sunday evening.
The shoot-out took place at an ATM in the Bergville CBD, where a Bergville policeman was apparently attacked and shot in the right shoulder.
The officer managed to draw his service pistol and return fire, hitting his attacker in the stomach.
The officer managed to get to Bergville police station, where fellow colleagues called emergency services and rushed to the scene.
The attacker was arrested by fast-acting Bergville police still in the CBD. The attacker “claimed to be a police reservist”, but this is still being investigated. A licensed firearm was recovered from the suspect, who is currently in a Pietermaritzburg hospital.
The Bergville officer, Constable Sifiso Mncube, is currently recovering in La Verna Hospital.
