Two police officers are set to appear in court to face charges of
corruption and theft after allegedly taking money and goods following a tavern
raid in Diepsloot near Johannesburg.
The suspects, a sergeant and a reservist aged 39 and 46 respectively,
are members of the Diepsloot police unit.
According to police spokesperson warrant officer Daniel Mavimbela the
officers confiscated liquor worth R6 500 from a Diepsloot tavern, and demanded
the tavern’s owner pay a R800 bribe for his freedom during a raid on the tavern
in June this year.
The owner could only afford to pay R700.
The tavern owner later went to the police to complain about the raid. It
was subsequently discovered neither the raid nor the cash paid to the police
were on police records.
A case of theft and corruption was then opened against the officers.
The two men are due to appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrates’ Court
on the 12th of November.
