Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega has expressed shock over the shooting
incident.(SABC)
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the
deaths of five people in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.
Four people were shot dead at the local police station allegedly by an off duty police officer on Wednesday.
Following the incident the officer ran back home, police gave chase and there was an exchange of fire in which he was also killed.
National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega and Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane have sent their condolences to the families of the deceased.
Phiyega says efforts should be made to prevent such incidents.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba says the wife of the officer had gone to the police station accompanied by two people to open a case of domestic violence against the officer.
Mothiba says the 32 year old Constable then fled following the shooting.

inquest docket has been opened
The Constable was stationed at Alexandra Police Station and he used to
work as a court orderly at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.
Nkosi-Malobane has sent words of support to the families of the deceased.
Phiyega has expressed shock over the incident. Phiyega says they need to pay more attention to issues related to domestic violence.
“Incidences such as these draw attention to the challenges we face on a daily basis in policing, also the importance of domestic violence, that as a society we need to give much attention to dealing with issues related to domestic violence. It is not an easy day for us as the South African Police Service."
An inquest docket has been opened. Phiyega says she will also look if security needs to be beefed up in police stations to prevent incidents like these. She says they will provide counselling to those affected.
