JOHANNESBURG
- A former Hawks captain
has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a R107 million heist in
Mpumalanga.
The Hawks
investigating team, together with the police's task force, arrested Bhekani
Gcabashe at his home in Bronkhorstspruit on Wednesday. Another team also raided
his lavish home in Belfast.
In April
last year an armed group raided an SBV depot in Emahlahleni and stole more than
R100 million after overpowering two guards and robbing them of their weapons.
Hawks
spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi says more than 20 suspects have been arrested.
“He is
linked to the R107 million cash heist that took place in 2014. That took place
in the premises of the SBV Company. So far we have arrested about 22 suspects
and he’s the 22nd.”
The Hawks
say one of the former captain is a suspected king pin of a syndicate.
Mulaudzi
says they're hopeful Gcabashe will eventually be sent to jail.
“We can
confirm that he’s one of the high flyers in Mpumalanga, and despite the fact
that he was former member or the DPCI [Directorate for Priority Crime
Investigation], it doesn’t mean he’s above the law. We are happy with the
progress thus far and we are hoping that when the case goes to court, everyone
who has been arrested will spend some time in jail.”
