Durban - Police are hunting for an alleged rapist who escaped from the
back of the police van on his way to Westville Prison.
Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane explained that seven suspects were
being transferred to Westville Prison from Ezinqoleni Court in Port Shepstone.
“At the corner of Harry Gwala (Booth) and Vusi Mzi-mela (Bellair) Road,
Cato Manor, the police driver heard a knocking sound at the back of the
vehicle. When he reached Westville Prison he discovered that the padlock was
missing and that one suspect had escaped.”
A case of escaping from lawful custody is being investigated by the Cato
Manor SAPS.
According to a reliable source, the prisoners had pushed the van door
outwards using their feet.
They had noticed that the top of the door had a lock while the bottom
was latched. They bent the door outwards, creating a gap between the door and
van, whereupon the escapee crawled out and took the gap.
He ran into the dense bushes around the Cato Manor sports grounds.
