Durban 'torture' cops out on bail
17 January 2014 at 11:19
Four Durban policemen arrested on charges of
torture, corruption and fraud have been released on bail of R3 000 each.
The men appeared in the Durban Magistrate's court
yesterday.
The officers were arrested the same day, following an investigation by police watchdog IPID.
They are alleged to have assaulted a man in custody and extorted R3 000 from him in February last year.
IPID's Moses Dlamini says they have handed over the matter to SAPS to decide if the officers should be suspended.
"Now that the police are aware of the arrest of these members, in terms of the police disciplinary regulations, they can take actions such as suspension or launch an investigation which may result in the suspension of the police officers," he said.
